  1. Birmingham is the most populated city in Alabama
  2. It was founded in 1871 and was named after Birmingham, England
  3. It is nicknamed “The Magic City” because it grew so quickly
  4. Another nickname for Birmingham was the “Pittsburgh of the South” because of its booming iron industry
  5. Today Birmingham is home to one of the top medical facilities in the world, as well as one of the country’s largest banking centers.
  6. It is home to a large statue of Vulcan that was commissioned for the World’s Fair in 1904.  The statue represents the city’s iron and steel industries.
  7. Birmingham is the only place in the world where all three ingredients (coal, iron ore, and limestone) needed to make steel can be found together.
  8. It was the first city to celebrate Veteran’s Day and continues to host large celebrations every year.
  9. Birmingham is home to Rickwood Field, the oldest baseball stadium in the country.
  10. Sloss Furnaces is the only blast furnace site in the U.S. that is available for the public to visit.  It now functions as a museum and a concert venue.
